A calm and caring voice

December 9, 2024

Much to a mother’s relief, an OnStar Advisor made all the difference when Member Drew B. hit a deer.

Every time a child gets behind the wheel, parents worry. That’s just how it works. And that’s why one very early morning in June, Member Mary B. rolled over in bed and checked her son Drew’s location on the OnStar Guardian® app.*

The dot representing Drew and his Chevrolet Trax was stopped on a rural highway in northern Ohio. She waited. She watched. That dot didn’t move. She tried to call him, and it went to voicemail. The dot still didn’t move. So she woke up Drew’s dad.

“I don't even know how to describe it,” Drew says. “The amount of emotion, of terror, fear and then just a sudden calmness when I realized I'm OK and I’m taken care of.”

“I wholeheartedly believe that the only reason I survived was because of the careful crafting of my car and OnStar keeping me calm,” Drew says.

“The people that have this experience realize these services are not just for the people in the car,” Drew’s mother, Mary, says. “But for family members, there’s impact in knowing that OnStar is there for them.”

“It was a county road,” Drew says. “Rural and farm fields. There were patches of heavy fog.”

Drew’s morning began early, because they all did. He was working a summer job nearly an hour from his home. He woke up at 3 a.m., got ready and headed out through areas of dense fog. He was just past a high school, surrounded by farm fields, when another patch of fog cleared and there was a deer standing directly in front of him. There wasn’t anything he could do.

The whole time, the Advisor kept me calm, kept me safe. I am so thankful for that.

“The first thing I remember was my lights in the car immediately flashed on,” Drew says. “I see the air bag to the left of me, there’s a ringing in my ears and my glasses are down like a necklace. I’m like, What happened? Then I noticed that my car was talking to me.”

That was an OnStar Advisor* checking on him. It was his first crash, and Drew was alone on an empty road. He didn’t know what to do next. The Advisor did and was with him — first through the vehicle and then on his phone — until First Responders arrived.

“I don’t even know how to describe it,” Drew says. “The amount of emotion, like terror, fear and then just a sudden calmness, when I realized I'm OK, and it’s taken care of.”

When he hung up with the Advisor is when Mary was able to get through on the phone. Drew led the call with the most important information: He was fine. This was the second time OnStar came through for this family. Mary was talking to her husband when he and their daughter were in an accident. Still connected, she heard the OnStar Advisor checking on them.

“We could have bought Drew something else for him to drive as a 16-year-old driver, but we didn’t want to do that,” she says. “We wanted to make sure whatever we picked for him to drive had OnStar.”

Automatic Crash Response even helps First Responders

Timothy Kimble worked in public safety for years, and he saw his share of crashes. But OnStar’s quick response really hit home when he was in a crash.
