After being robbed at gunpoint, Member finds a partner in OnStar
Because the unexpected can happen anywhere — even the safest places — an OnStar Advisor is always there to help.
Lacey Bond never thought she’d need OnStar safety.
The San Antonio, Texas, resident’s Chevrolet Equinox had come with an OnStar trial, but it wasn’t something she thought she’d actually use. Sure, it had come in handy every now and then when she needed to remotely start
But that all changed on the evening of January 6, 2018.
Lacey was sitting in her Equinox in the parking lot of a quiet apartment complex, waiting for a friend to get back home. It was 7 p.m. and she was in a safe area. In fact, she’d later learn there had never been a robbery reported in that apartment complex.
“It wasn’t like I was out late,” says Lacey, recounting the incident. “I was waiting for my friend to get back, as she had recently had a death in the family, and I wanted to express my condolences. But then I saw the car pull up behind me and the guy get out.”
The guy had a gun. A second man got out of the car. They demanded Lacey’s phone, money and keys. It only took a few seconds before they were gone, leaving her stranded and alone, clutching an empty purse — an expensive purse the thieves had neglected to take, she wryly points out.
Despite just having her vehicle and possessions stolen at gunpoint, Lacey kept a clear head. The thieves had taken her phone to prevent her from calling the police, so she immediately started knocking on nearby doors to try to contact police and her family. After giving her statement for the police report, her husband and her father took her back home where Lacey immediately began pacing back and forth, thinking to herself, what else can I do?
She immediately started knocking on nearby doors to try to contact police and her family.
She first tried remotely locating her phone, but the thieves had already dumped it. Then she remembered that her car had OnStar.
“I used to be one of those people who thought they would never need a service like OnStar,” says Lacey. “I wasn’t really sure if it would work, but I knew they had an anti-theft program, so I thought, well, let’s give it a shot.”
She called OnStar and explained the situation to an Advisor who began the process of finding the stolen car. OnStar Stolen Vehicle Assistance
“He found my car, locked the doors and put a block on it within 15 minutes,” Lacey says. “I was shocked at how quick it was.”
San Antonio police recovered and returned Lacey’s Equinox, undamaged and in good condition. Because of the fast response, the thieves hadn’t even had time to get everything out of the vehicle before abandoning it — one of them left a glove behind. And it was all thanks to Lacey’s quick thinking and her call to OnStar.
“I just kept thinking, I need to do something. I need to get my car back,” she says. “I never thought I’d need OnStar in my car before. Now, I’m a customer for life.”
